Amethyst was one of the first holistic centres in Ireland. It was founded by Alison Hunter in 1982 with the idea that Amethyst would be an umbrella under which all kinds of activities to do with the health and healing of body, mind, spirit and emotions could take place.

Charitable status was granted to the Amethyst Company in 1991. Amethyst Resource for Human Development became a limited company with charitable status in 2000. The main objectives of the Trust are "the deployment of educational and therapeutic skills incorporating training in counselling, healing, interpersonal skills and personal growth".

Over the years Amethyst has been mainly self-financing as rent has been paid from the fees of those attending individual sessions and courses. There have also been some generous gifts to help with equipment etc. Administrative work has been done voluntarily by Alison Hunter , Shirley Ward and Carmel Byrne who together are the team working with complementary skills in Amethyst.
